Suspect arrested in Ketchikan murder case

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - A man was found dead in Ketchikan Friday and an arrest has been made in the case.

A release from the Ketchikan Police Department says officers responded to a report for a welfare check just before 11:30 a.m.  The caller reported that the man was possibly asleep or passed out. The body was located near a sidewalk between shipping containers and a building.  Police says it had been been there from the night  before.

The victim was identified as 55 year old old Richard Branda.  Police say circumstances at the scene were suspicious.

At about 7 that evening the dispatch center received a call from a man saying he had killed the victim.  Police went to an address in the 100 block of Austin Street and arrested 42 year old Joshua K. Bliss.

Police have not identified a cause of death but they say some sort of physical altercation occurred between Branda and Bliss.

Bliss was charged with murder in the first degree and tampering with evidence.  He was jailed at the Ketchikan Correction Center and held without bail.
