Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - An update on the Cultural Immersion Park planned by the Central Council Tlingit Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska was provided on Action Line Tuesday.
The facility is planned at the site of the former Thane Ore House.
Deputy Chief Operating Officer Ken Truitt was among the guests on the program. He said the engineering study determined that the existing building is a total loss.
As a result, they have gained preliminary authorization from the CBJ Docks and Harbors Department, which has jurisdiction of the property, to raise the present structure and replacing it with new construction. Truitt doesn't know if tearing down the existing building will occur this winter or wait until Spring.
The start of the new construction depends on fundraising. Truitt said that more targeted fundraising aimed at potentially large contributors is planned over the next weeks.
The central council has established a GoFundMe account to which people can donate.
