Two arrested in large gun theft case

Anchorage, Alaska (KINY) The U.S Attorney announced the arrest of two men after the theft of 36 firearms from an Anchorage gun dealer.

Acting U.S. Attorney Bryan Schroder said the thefts took place on September 7th from EDC Alaska on Northern Lights Blvd.  Seth Kaufman, 31, and Christopher Kratsas-Derr, 27, are charged with the theft of firearms from a licensed dealer.  Kaufman was also charged with possession of stolen firearms.

Video surveillance cameras and an alert clerk at the business helped police in the investigation.  The owners of the gun shop remembered a suspicious customer from a few days before the burglary and were able to identify Kaufman.  He was apprehended September 11 at a Motel 6 in Anchorage after he tried to flee from a second story window.  The two men were scheduled to be arraigned in U.S District Court in Anchorage this morning.  If convicted they face up to 10 years in federal prison and fines of up to $250,000.  The Anchorage Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives contributed to the investigation.
