Juneau, AK (KINY) Troopers were forced to fire upon a wanted man in North Pole after the man set fire to his house and threatened troopers with an axe.
Late Friday night, Troopers set out to arrest 36-year-old Gary Lawrence Jr of North Pole on a $500,000 arrest warrant at a home on Hartzog Loop. Lawrence was wanted on the charges of attempted murder and other felony domestic violence offenses.
Once troopers were able to contact the man, a fire was started in the residence. Flames quickly engulfed the structure, where Lawrence fled the building and then threatened troopers with an axe.
Troopers fired upon the man, who sustained life threatening injuries. Life saving measures were attempted, but Lawrence died from the wounds.
The Alaska Bureau of Investigations are assisting the Fairbanks General Investigative Unit with the investigation.
No one else involved in the incidence, aside from Lawrence, had been harmed. Next of kin were notified. The trooper(s) that had fired their service weapons will be placed on 72 hour administrative leave. Once that leave is over, their names will be identified. No further details on the incident were made available.

Trooper Jeffrey “Scott” McAfee, assigned to D Detachment Fairbanks Patrol. McAfee is a three year veteran of AST.
