New Potential Ballot Measure Would Devastate Community
New Potential Ballot Initatives Would Devastate Community
submitted by McHugh Pierre
Fellow community members, Three ballot initiative petitions have been filed with the City and Borough of Juneau that we believe would devastate the community of Juneau.
The community needs your help.
In response, we have formed a grassroots coalition to vigorously protect Juneau’s future against this assault. We are organizing an effort to engage with all Juneau residents and organizations. Will you join our local, community-based movement? Your support — standing with us in fundraising, volunteering, and advocacy —will be crucial to the health and future of Juneau.
Our members, consistent with our collaborative local engagement for more than 40 years, will continue to responsibly manage tourism growth through sound public process that involves extensive community input. These initiatives undermine the past, current, and future public process efforts toward sustainable tourism management and a vibrant and healthy community for every citizen.
Timeline: The city clerk has until May 3rd to review the initiatives and issue signature booklets, at which point the Global Cruise Activist Network will have 30 days to collect approximately 3,000 signatures per initiative. If successful, the initiatives will be on the October municipal election ballot.
We believe these initiatives would be irresponsible any time and even more so as Juneau strives to recover from a pandemic.
In the days since these initiatives were filed, members of our organization have received an outpouring of concern with passionate support to organize and defeat this aggressive move to decimate our community. We will harness this momentum and ensure that every single one of our voices are heard. The future of Juneau depends on our unity and resounding voice.
