Alleged drug trafficker changes his plea

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Don Irenio Castro Santiago II pled guilty at a court appearance in Anchorage and now faces up to 10 years in federal prison.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jack Schmidt said Santiago was part of a plot to send drugs from the lower 48 into Juneau and then onto Kodiak.

His sentence hearing will be held in May.

His co-defendant Carlito Marcelino Velasco has yet to have his day in court.

Authorities allege the pair conspired to send over 233 grams of methamphetamine in a mail package from Juneau to Kodiak on June 4, 2019.

US Post Inspectors intercepted the package at the Mendenhall Post Office.

The drugs were found hidden inside a coffee roasting bag.

Authorities placed an electronic monitoring device on the package and followed it when it was delivered in Kodiak on June 6.
