Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The annual bicycle and sidewalk chalk decorating event was from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm Saturday, July 2nd to prepare for the parade.

Located at the Douglas Community Library Parking Garage, families participated in decorating children's bikes, scooters, and wheelchairs for the Douglas Fourth of July Parade.

The Douglas parade will be at 2:00 pm on July 4th.

Supplies such as ribbons and flags were provided.

Chalk was also provided for children to expand their creativity in the sunshine.

Miah Lager, the organizer of this event and a member of the Douglas Fourth of July Committee, talked about bike decorating.

"So, we're just getting kids decorated up for the children's parade for the Douglas Fourth of July parade. And we've really moved the decorations towards not knowing if it's going to be sunny. So then we're trying to move them all towards waterproof and a lot of reflection. So we've got little spokes that go in all the wheels that are glow in the dark, and they make noise. You move the wheel. Reflective tape, stars so they can be seen and caught, you know, at night too. So just trying to get kids to get their helmets on and be seen. We have a good 100 show up, you know, multiple families and kind of coming in and out. A lot of kids have like a vision with their bikes."

Lager also said it's not too late if a child wants to be in the Douglas parade.

"If you want to participate in the children's parade, just to meet over by Gastineau school and kids get $1 for participating in the children's parade. Bring your bikes. Even if you didn't participate in the decorating, you can bring your bike, scooter, or walk."
