Flags along Egan Drive unavoidably delayed

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Friends of the Flags would like to announce that the installation of the U.S. state flags downtown along Egan Drive has been unavoidably delayed.

The installation of the flags, which normally occurs in early May, is delayed this season due to supply chain issues.

The new flags have been ordered but have yet to arrive.

An estimated arrival date has not been provided, but Friends of the Flags are hopeful they will arrive soon.

“The winds and rains each summer damage the fabrics of the flags so much that they cannot be reused year after year,” explained Liz Perry, President/CEO of Travel Juneau. “We are all disappointed that this iconic Juneau summer tradition has been delayed.”

Beginning in 1978, the annual installation of state flags has become a long-standing tradition in Juneau, interrupted by the two-year reconstruction of Egan Drive. Friends of the Flags provides new state flags and hardware for the program and is a volunteer organization that partners with Tourism Best Management Practices and Travel Juneau.

The program is funded by donations, and used flags are auctioned off each fall to generate funds for the purchase of new flags.
