Free school meal service expands for weekends & other district updates

    Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The community food distribution has been a rousing success with over 16,000 meals served in the first three weeks of operation.

    The daily program will now be extended for Saturday and Sunday.

    Students can pick up grab and go meals for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday each Friday morning.

    The locations include Sayeik: Gastineau from 9 to 11 am, Cedar Park from 11 am until noon, Glacier Valley Elementary from 9 am until noon, Harborview Elementary from 9 am until noon, Riverbend Elementary from 9 am until noon, DZ Middle School from 9 am until noon, and Floyd Dryden Middle School from 9 am until noon.

    The funding for this program is based on the number of students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals.

    The school district plans to email a survey to families on Friday to ask them about how the district can continue to meet the needs of students.

    The district is also considering plans for transitional activities like end-of-year celebrations, graduations, and kindergarten registrations.
