Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Chandler Kemp challenged the record for the Glenn Frick Memorial Parade Mile on Monday, along the Fourth of July parade route with a time of four minutes and 31 seconds.

“It is fun to run with a crowd,” Kemp said. “Everybody’s out for the parade and get to piggyback on that and have some cheering during the race, and it makes it really fun…”

The time falls just short of the course mark of 4:22 set by Galena High School graduate (2017) Kaleb Korta in 2021. Juneau-Douglas High School: Kalé graduate (2015) Riley Moser ran 4:33 in 2019.

Kemp, a 2008 Haines High School graduate has raced at Cornell University and runs wherever he travels.

“There are probably some crowds like this in college and some road races in California that have a bit of a crowd but this is pretty awesome,” he said.

Kemp commented on the race’s namesake, Glenn Frick, saying he knew him a bit, “mainly I knew who he was. I knew his reputation. I’m not sure I ever got to meet him in person or run with him…”

Beth Gollin topped the women’s field in 5:30.

“Tired,” she said at the finish line. “This is a very cool race. It is hard to skip it. I didn’t know this morning if I would do it or not but it is hard to say no to.”

Over 40 runners participated in the race.

The top five men were Kemp in 4:31, Tommy Allen 4:32, Luke Davis 5:04, Logan Felman 5:20 and Justin Jones 5:40.

The top five females were Gollin in 5:30, Amy Spieth 5:46, Jenn Shelton, pushing Cima in a stroller, came in at 6:28, April Rezendes hit 6:54 and Brea Mesdag 6:55.

The entry fee was left to the generosity of each participant. The race is a fundraiser for the Juneau-Douglas High School: Kalé cross-country team and named after local Juneau running legend Glenn Frick. Frick was born Oct. 27, 1938, in Colebrook, New Hampshire. He died on March 7, 2014, at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle shortly after being diagnosed with lung cancer. He was 75, and had just run the Juneau mountains he loved with friends a week before.
